This is like a home to me. I've met some really super nice people here, and I guess they are like my family. We can talk and have fun with each other, and if we have things on our minds there is always somebody that we can talk to. I feel like I do have a future. If you need a place to live, there is help out there. Try The Mustard Seed — this is the most help I've ever had. I'm just so glad there are people out there who care enough to try and help. My name is Darren. I have struggled with addiction most of my life and have lived on and off the streets of Calgary for around 20 years.
I remember visiting The Seed's small outreach house in the early s when a cup of coffee and a friendly person to talk to was how it was run. Though I have put in some effort to help myself over the years, it was only when I became involved in The Seed's housing that the real positive change started to happen for me.
A great apartment was found for me last October, but after a time it seemed a wise move to transfer into the Centre. This is probably the best decision I could have made. I live in a safe, clean, sober living environment with easy access to all the different support services offered at The Seed.
I have received help with housing, employment and health, as well as personal counselling and spiritual support. It's instilled in me a deep feeling of gratitude and a strong desire to take responsibility to do what I need to do, to achieve lasting change in my life. I am very fortunate to get to grow with The Mustard Seed. My name is Duff and I am a resident here in the Centre.
Bipolar has affected every area of my life and I have osteoarthritis in my hips, to the point where I now need hip replacement surgery. In order to perform my daily talks at both of my jobs, I was eating handfuls of over-the-counter arthritis pain meds. Secretly, I had been off of my bipolar meds for a year and a half. My life was like a house of cards and, if one more card was stacked on top, it was coming down.
That card was placed in October It turns out that I had a perforated intestine and emergency life-saving surgery was performed. With my family at my side and with the power of many prayers, I survived.
My social worker at the hospital heard about the Centre. We applied and I came down for an interview. I was accepted and moved in. Faith, good timing and good people are my only explanations. My life still has its challenges, but living here helps me face them with support, independence and dignity. Thanks the Centre! Details can be found at Alberta Health website www.
It is a living community where residents honour one another to live healthy lifestyles moving away from substance abuse. In Permanent Supportive Housing PSH we strive to create a culture of respect, trust, self-autonomy, responsibility and community demonstrated in action. We value safe spaces and a culture of peace in which to learn, grow and achieve holistic well-being.
The services philosophy of Resident Engagement is to work with The Mustard Seed program areas and community partners to provide compassionate, individualized, voluntary services designed to help residents meet their own goals for self-sufficiency and self-determination. Permanent Supportive Housing at The Mustard Seed will provide a unique opportunity for single men and women who are homeless, at-risk of homelessness or have low incomes.
Residents will live in a drug and alcohol-free community with full access to a variety of services and programs that will meet their specific needs, while being encouraged in independence and growth. This time will provide an opportunity for residents to share their concerns as well as celebrate their victories and be supported in their plans for the future. Resident Engagement staff will provide an orientation as well as general information regarding services for all residents.
We will coordinate on-site recreational, social and community-building activities; support groups and educational opportunities such as computer classes, speakers, etc.
Families living in these units having access to wrap-around supports and individualized care that will help encourage dignity, safe and stable community living, and positive progression towards personal wellness goals.
Apart from housing opportunities, the vision of this project is to provide collaborative spaces where community partners can engage and help serve the community in a holistic and supportive way.
Residents and community members of Ogden will have access to several different community services, including:. Operated in conjunction with Ogden United Church, the Hub will facilitate free access to wrap-around supports such as counselling services, employment coaching, and advocacy. The Mustard Seed will work diligently with the existing resources in the community of Ogden to ensure that the Hub provides family programming catered to the interests and needs of the community.
This will be a place for community members to come together to cook, eat and grow while giving them access and exposure to healthy cooking and new resources. Happy Days Preschool will continue to support families in Ogden alongside a complimentary daycare centre to help broaden the scope of childcare available for the community. The daycare and pre-school will both operate on a low-income basis to ensure the community can access quality childcare.
The Ogden Family Housing will prioritize selecting families that are eligible within the Ogden community. Upon program start-up, The Mustard Seed will collaborate with community organizations such as Millican-Ogden Community Association, South East Calgary Resource Centre and Youth Centres of Calgary to host open house and drop-in sessions for families to meet with Resident Engagement and Property Management staff to determine eligibility in the program.
If the program has vacancies after supporting the community need, The Mustard Seed will support clients who need access to family housing as well as our social service sector partners who support families in need. As long as families continue to meet the eligibility requirements and follow the house rules as outlined in the Resident Tenancy Agreement, families can stay as long as they would like. If a family does decide to move, The Mustard Seed will help them transition to a new home and discuss further options for accessing wrap-around supports.
As an organization helping those experiencing homelessness and poverty, we recognize the importance of meeting people where they are at — from chronically homelessness individuals to those at risk of eviction and everything in between. Our shelters provide temporary opportunities for struggling individual adults to meet their immediate basic needs food, shelter, clothing , as well as access wrap-around support services to help move individuals out of the shelter and into an alternative form of housing.
PSH is a housing philosophy that combines affordable housing with wrap-around supports to ensure that families can maintain stable housing and meet their goals of wellness and self-sufficiency. As a major player in the homeless-serving sector in Calgary, The Mustard Seed as an organization has recognized the need for housing and support services to support multiple models of care. The Mustard Seed as an organization does not operate safe-injection sites or supervised consumption sites in any of its locations and will not operate any of these facilities in the foreseeable future.
Responding to the call for housing options for those across all spectrums of care, The Mustard Seed in Calgary provides sober, permanent supportive housing facilities to support those residents who do not qualify or want to be part of a harm-reduction model of housing.
This option in the spectrum of housing is beneficial to the residents in our building who are seeking a safe and sober living and are committed to maintaining their sobriety. Men and women stay in separate shared rooms.
