There are no pairing buttons, or any kind of software that came with the set. If you look at the quick start guide it is just "plug the dongle in, put in batteries. A keyboard does appear in the device manager when I plug the dongle in, even if I don't have batteries in the keyboard. The mouse on this set works fine. It is just the keyboard. When I put in new batteries and start typing, the battery indicator lights up green for about 5 seconds and then fades away. There is no version of that for windows 8, but there is something on the mouse's page called Mouse and Keyboard Center which I was able to install.

It shows my mouse and keyboard as being connected just because the dongle is plugged in. The mouse and keyboard can be without batteries and they still show as being connected to my computer, so that isn't very helpful.
